What can you do if you don’t have Hulu yet in your country? (Germany)

Streaming provider Hulu is a successful Netflix competitor in the US. Unfortunately, the German Hulu branch does not exist yet. However, with a few tricks, you can access the media library of the American video platform from Germany. However, you must be aware of the risks.

America is and will be the world’s largest TV series producer. German TV fans are often jealous because many productions are just late for us, or sometimes not at all. A lot has improved since Netflix launched in Germany in 2014, but not all US offers are still available in Germany. In America, many TV productions are broadcast on Hulu, the broadcast service carried by NBC, FOX and ABC broadcasters. The range of movies and TV shows is therefore of high quality. In Germany, the Hulu flow is unfortunately blocked by a block of countries (geoblocking). If you want to use the American VoD platform though, you need to make some preparations, which we will explain to you below.

Install a VPN tool

A VPN tool replaces your German IP address with an American IP address so it appears to Hulu that you are accessing the media library from the USA. This bypasses the country lock. There are some reliable VPN services like “NordVPN”, “ExpressVPN”, “UnblockUS” or “PureVPN” that you can test for free before paying five to ten euros a month. We strongly advise against using free tools like “Hola”. This quickly makes you vulnerable to hackers and makes tracking online much easier.

Be Careful When Using a VPN Tool

The legal status when using VPN services is not 100% clear. In case law, the use of a VPN service is not considered to be “bypassing an effective safeguard measure” and is therefore not prohibited. As long as you only post and download the content, there is theoretically no copyright infringement. Many streaming providers are still searching for VPN users, so you may receive the error message “It looks like you are using a blocker or proxy.” Then you have to switch to another vehicle. In April 2017, the European Court of Justice also passed a law against illegal streaming. Sooner or later this law could be extended to VPN tools as well, because with them you can see something that you are not actually allowed to see.

With the VPN tool enabled and payment details saved, you can now access the Hulu media library and stream it to your heart’s content. The platform has two subscription models with a basic monthly price. Note that you need to add the monthly fee for the VPN tool to the top. The subscription without commercial break is $ 12 per month (approximately € 10.20). Some content is still displayed with an ad at the beginning and end. The commercial break subscription currently costs $ 6 per month (about 5.08 Euros). The frequency of ads should be as high as on American television. This is tiring for the German audience. Both subscription models have a one-month testing phase. Membership can be canceled monthly.

After activating the VPN tool of your choice, you may need to create an account with Hulu and enter your payment information. This is the second problem you have to deal with. To pay, you need an American credit card or a US PayPal account. If you don’t have one, purchasing a Hulu gift card is the best solution.
